Painting a room in Toronto costs from $450 for a bedroom's walls and $700–$1,500 for a living or dining room in 2026, before HST. A bedroom with its ceiling and trim runs $700–$1,300. A room booked on its own is billed at no less than the $750 + HST minimum job.
How much does it cost to paint a bedroom in Toronto?
Painting a bedroom's walls in Toronto costs from $450 in 2026, before HST. With the ceiling and trim, a bedroom runs $700–$1,300. The room's size, its condition and the colour you choose decide where it lands in that range.
These are Great North's published prices, and every mandatory fee is already inside them. Each price includes the same work:
- Furniture moved and covered, and floors protected.
- Every surface cleaned, patched, sanded and primed where it needs it.
- Two coats of the paint named in your quote, cut in and rolled.
- The work area cleaned up at the end of every day.
- A walkthrough with you, with touch-ups done on the spot.
Cutting in:
brushing a clean, straight edge where a wall meets the ceiling, the trim or another colour, before the rest of the wall is rolled.
Interior work also carries a written 5-year workmanship warranty. It covers peeling, blistering and flaking caused by how the paint was applied.
How much does it cost to paint a living room, dining room or stairwell?
A living or dining room costs $700–$1,500 in 2026, before HST. A two-storey stairwell or hall runs $1,100–$2,200. Tall walls over a staircase need ladders and platforms set up with care. These ranges are wide because living spaces vary more than bedrooms do.
A 1950s Scarborough bungalow's living room is a different job from a newer Vaughan home's open-plan main floor. The second may have taller walls, more windows and one colour running into the kitchen and hall. Here is the full interior price list, the same figures as the interior painting page:
| Scope | Price, before HST |
|---|---|
| Whole-home interior | $2.00–$3.25per sq ft of wall area |
| Bedroom, walls only | From $450 |
| Bedroom with ceiling and trim | $700–$1,300 |
| Living or dining room | $700–$1,500 |
| Ceiling, added to a room | $200–$400per room |
| Two-storey stairwell or hall | $1,100–$2,200 |
| 3-bedroom home, whole interior | $4,800–$9,500 |
Prices are in CAD before HST and include every mandatory fee. Minimum job $750 + HST (one crew-day).
What do ceilings, trim and doors add to the cost of a room?
Adding the ceiling costs $200–$400 per room, before HST. Baseboard, casing and crown cost $2.50–$4.00 per linear ft. Interior doors are quoted with the job, so count yours before you ask for a price.
Ceilings take longer than their size suggests. All of the work is overhead, and every piece of furniture needs a cover. Trim is detail work. It is brushed or sprayed, usually in a harder-wearing, glossier finish than the walls. Trim and door painting covers it on its own or with a room.
To estimate your baseboard, measure the room's perimeter and subtract the doorways. A 12 by 12 foot bedroom has about 45 feet of baseboard once the door is taken out.
If the ceiling has yellowed or the trim is chipped, paint them with the walls. Fresh wall colour makes tired white trim look worse. A second visit later usually costs more than doing it all at once.
Why do two rooms of the same size get different prices?
Because the work differs even when the floor plan doesn't. Wall area, the condition of the walls and the colour change decide most of the price. Two 12 by 12 foot bedrooms can sit at opposite ends of the same range.
Wall area:
the square footage of the walls themselves: the room's perimeter multiplied by its height, less large openings such as doors and windows.
A 12 by 12 foot bedroom with 8-foot ceilings has 384 square feet of wall area before openings. Raise the ceiling to 9 feet and it becomes 432 square feet, one-eighth more wall to paint. Here is what moves a room up its range:
| What changes | It costs more when |
|---|---|
| Wall area | Ceilings are 9 feet or taller, or the room has dormers and bump-outs |
| Condition | There are nail pops, cracks, dents or old anchors to fill |
| Colour change | You go from dark to light, or to a deep colour that needs extra coats |
| Trim and doors | The room has lots of trim, or several doors and windows to cut around |
| Furniture | The room is full, such as an office with shelves and a desk |
| Access | Walls rise over a staircase or sit behind built-ins |
The age of the house changes the repairs. Plaster walls in older Toronto houses often have hairline cracks. Drywall in newer builds often shows nail pops as the wood framing dries and shrinks. The guide to fixing nail pops and cracks shows what that work involves. A big colour change can mean primer or a third coat; see how many coats of paint walls need.
Why does one room on its own cost at least the minimum job?
Because a single room still needs a full visit. Travel, setup, drying time between coats and cleanup take much the same time whatever the room's size. Great North's minimum job is $750 + HST, one crew-day.
A bedroom's walls start at $450, so a small bedroom booked alone is billed at the minimum. Adding a second bedroom, the hallway or the ceiling to the same visit makes better use of that crew-day. Two small bedrooms booked together cost less than two separate visits at the minimum. Our post on why painters have a minimum charge shows how to make the minimum work for you.
Is it cheaper per room to paint the whole house?
Usually, yes. A whole-home job spreads travel, setup and cleanup across every room. No single room is billed at the minimum. The whole interior of a 3-bedroom home runs $4,800–$9,500 in 2026, before HST.
Whole-home interiors are also priced by wall area, at $2.00–$3.25 per sq ft of wall area. That's the area of the walls, not the floor area in your listing, so the two numbers won't match. The interior painting cost guide breaks these prices down, and the house painting cost guide adds exteriors.
How do you get a price for your room?
Start with the estimator for a price range in about a minute, or text photos of the room. A named person replies within 1 business hour, and a crew lead quotes from your photos and the room's size. Your written, itemized quote arrives within 24 hours of seeing the job.
The quote names the paint by brand and line and lists the prep. It shows the price plus HST, and the dates. If the room turns out bigger or smaller than the size you gave, the price changes to match before any work starts. Projects over $2,500 include a free 30-minute colour consultation.
