Local notes
What should you know about painting a home in Aurora?
Aurora grew up around the corner of Yonge and Wellington streets, and the railway came in 1853; houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s still fill the blocks northeast of that corner. Suburbs spread from the 1950s, the Hills of St. Andrew went up in the 1980s, and newer subdivisions have filled in since, with many brick detached houses and towns.
What needs a heritage permit
Aurora's heritage permit guide lists painting among the minor work that needs no heritage permit in Northeast Old Aurora. Bigger changes, such as new siding or windows, may need one, so check with the Town before work starts.
Queen Anne trim takes time
Northeast Old Aurora's houses include Queen Anne Revival ones, a style known for brackets, spindles and patterned shingles. That detail is scraped and brushed by hand, so test the old layers for lead first and allow extra prep time.
Two-storey foyers
Aurora's population more than doubled between 1991 and 2021, and many larger houses from those years have two-storey foyers. The foyer wall often runs up the stairs into the upper hall with no corner to stop at, so treat all three as one job.
Neighbourhoods
Neighbourhoods we serve in Aurora
What the homes are like in each part of Aurora, and what that means for a paint job.
Aurora Heights
Aurora Heights was the town's first large subdivision: building began in 1957, and residents moved in from 1958. Houses of that age probably have some lead-based paint, so old trim is tested before sanding.
Aurora Highlands
Aurora Highlands is Aurora's largest neighbourhood, from the 1960s and 1970s homes of Regency Acres to new houses on a former golf course. One street there can need original-trim prep, the next only new-build touch-ups.
Hills of St. Andrew
Built in the 1980s, this neighbourhood has large detached houses on generous, treed lots. Oak kitchens and railings from that decade take a stain-blocking primer before paint.
Bayview Wellington
Bayview Wellington was farmland until the 1970s and grew up around the Town Hall, which opened there in 1991. Most homes are brick detached houses, semis and towns, so exterior work is mostly trim and doors.

Questions
Questions from Aurora
What does kitchen cabinet painting cost in Aurora?
$3,200–$8,500 in 2026, before HST, for most kitchens in Aurora. It is priced from $160 per piece, counting each door, drawer front and panel.
How do you dispose of leftover paint in Aurora?
Take it to a York Region household hazardous waste depot. Aurora residents can drop off up to 60 litres a day, in the original containers, with proof of address. Paint never goes in the garbage.
Is lead paint a concern in Aurora's older houses?
It can be. Health Canada says a home built before 1960 probably contains lead-based paint, and Aurora still has houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Have old paint tested before it is sanded or scraped, since the dust is the hazard.
What does it cost to paint a two-storey foyer in an Aurora house?
$1,100–$2,200 in 2026, before HST. In many Aurora houses the foyer wall runs up the stairs into the upper hall, so all three are priced as one job.
Do you need a heritage permit to paint a house in Aurora?
Usually not for painting. Aurora's heritage permit guide lists painting among the minor work that needs no permit in Northeast Old Aurora, though new siding or windows may need one. Elsewhere, painting needs no building permit.
