Before we start
How each surface is checked
Paint usually fails because of the surface under it, so we check the surface before we quote, and put the answer in writing.
We check every surface
Before we quote, a crew lead checks every surface, from your photos or on site.
Your quote names the exceptions
Any surface we can't warrant is named, with the reason: paint that's already peeling, damp masonry, rotten wood you're keeping, or prep you choose to skip. We'll still paint it if you want.
Everything else is covered
Every other surface carries the full term, in writing.
The terms
What the warranty covers, and what it doesn't
What's covered
Defects in our workmanship, counted from the day the job is completed:
- Peeling caused by how we prepared or applied the paint
- Blistering caused by how we prepared or applied the paint
- Flaking caused by how we prepared or applied the paint
What's not covered
Problems that start in the surface, not in our paint:
- Surfaces your quote names as not covered
- Moisture intrusion
- Structural movement
- Substrate failure
- Older coats letting go underneath ours
- Normal wear and cleaning
- Impact
- Abuse
- Paint you supplied
- Work by others after we finish
- Manufacturer defects
How we tell
We look at what came off. If only our paint lifted, from a surface your quote accepted, it's covered. If older coats came off with it, the older bond failed, so it isn't.

Great North Painting
Workmanship warranty
- Great North Painting warrants its workmanship against peeling, blistering and flaking caused by how it prepared or applied the paint, for 5 years (interior) and 3 years (exterior) from completion; cabinet finishes 2 years. It covers every surface your written quote accepts.
- Before we quote, a crew lead checks every surface. Your quote names any surface we can't warrant, and why, and those surfaces carry no warranty.
- Excludes moisture intrusion, structural movement, substrate failure, older coats letting go underneath ours, normal wear and cleaning, impact, abuse, paint you supplied, work by others after we finish and manufacturer defects.
- A claim is decided by what came off: only our paint, lifting from a surface your quote accepted, is covered.
- It covers the customer named on the written quote, at that property, once the job is paid in full. It does not pass to a later owner.
- It is in addition to your rights under Ontario law, including the Consumer Protection Act's rule that services are of a reasonably acceptable quality, and it does not limit them.
- Tell us within the term. We inspect within 10 business days and repair covered defects free.

Good to know
How do you look after fresh paint in the first month?
Treat it gently for the first 2 to 4 weeks, while the paint cures. Paint is dry to the touch in hours, but it takes weeks to reach its full hardness and washability.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| The first day | Keep the room aired, and keep furniture off the walls |
| The first two weeks | Lean nothing against the paint, and wipe marks gently with a damp cloth |
| After 2 to 4 weeks | Wash the walls normally. The paint's data sheet gives the wait for your product |
| Cabinets, for 30 days | Close doors softly, and keep cleaners and scrub pads off the finish |
Marks made in those first weeks are wear, not a defect. How long paint takes to dry and cure explains the difference between dry, recoat and cure for each kind of paint.
What does a workmanship defect look like?
Paint that peels, blisters or flakes because of how it was prepared or applied. That is what the warranty covers: our work, for the years stated above, on every surface your quote accepts.
To tell our work from the surface under it, look at what came off. A flake of only our paint is ours to fix. A flake that carries older coats with it means the older bond failed, not ours.
The exclusions are the things our work cannot control, and every home brings its own. These everyday examples show what each one means. The written warranty, not this list, is the authority.
| Not covered | An everyday example |
|---|---|
| Surfaces your quote names as not covered | Paint that was already peeling when we quoted, which you chose to keep |
| Moisture intrusion | A roof or plumbing leak that stains or lifts the paint |
| Structural movement | A crack that opens as the house settles |
| Substrate failure | The drywall, plaster or wood underneath giving way |
| Older coats letting go underneath ours | Old coats lifting off the wall and taking the new paint with them |
| Normal wear and cleaning | Scuffs, fading and marks from scrubbing over time |
| Impact | A dent or scrape from moving furniture |
| Abuse | Damage from harsh cleaners or rough use |
| Paint you supplied | A can you bought that fails on the wall |
| Work by others after we finish | A patch or touch-up another trade made later |
| Manufacturer defects | A fault in the paint itself |
If you are not sure which side of the line a problem falls on, send us a photo. We inspect within 10 business days, and we would sooner look than guess.
Which surfaces can't be covered?
The ones that can't hold paint until something else is fixed. A crew lead checks for these before quoting, and your quote names any it finds, with the reason, before you sign. We'll still paint them if you want.
| Surface | What we check | When the quote leaves it out |
|---|---|---|
| Old paint | Whether loose paint scrapes back to a sound edge | When it keeps lifting: the old bond is failing |
| Glossy or oil-based paint | Whether the job includes sanding and a bonding primer | When you choose to skip that prep |
| Brick, stucco and masonry | Damp, white salt deposits and hollow spots | When it's wet or salty: the water has to be fixed first |
| Wood | Soft or rotten spots | When rotten wood stays in place |
Our guide on whether you need primer explains what goes under paint on each surface.
What helps a paint job last?
Looking after the surface behind it. Most paint problems start with water, so the best care is dull and practical:
- Run the bathroom fan during a shower and for a while after it.
- Fix leaks and failed caulking when you first see them.
- Keep eavestroughs clear, so water does not run down painted walls and trim.
- Wash exterior paint gently, and keep sprinklers off the siding.
The paint sheen guide explains which finishes take washing best, room by room.
Questions
Questions GTA homeowners ask
What does your warranty cover?
Peeling, blistering and flaking caused by how we prepared or applied the paint, for 5 years on interiors, 3 on exteriors and 2 on cabinet finishes. It covers every surface your quote accepts. It doesn't cover moisture, movement, failing surfaces or older coats underneath, wear, impact, abuse or work by others.
How long is the warranty?
5 years on interior painting, 3 years on exterior painting and 2 years on cabinet finishes, counted from the day the job is finished. It covers every surface your quote accepts.
Why would a surface not be covered by the warranty?
Because some surfaces can't hold paint reliably, such as paint that is already peeling, damp masonry or rotten wood. Your quote names any of these, and why, before you sign. We'll still paint them if you want.
How do you decide whether a problem is covered?
We look at what came off. If only our paint lifted, from a surface your quote accepted, it's covered. If older coats came off with it, the older bond failed, so it isn't.
Do I get the warranty in writing?
Yes. We walk the finished job with you, fix any touch-ups on the spot, and hand over your written workmanship warranty once the job is paid.
How do I make a warranty claim?
Call, text or email us about what you've noticed. We inspect within 10 business days, look at what came off, and repair covered defects free.
