Good to know

Should oak railings and spindles go black or white?

Either colour works on oak once the clear finish is degreased, scuff-sanded and primed. The choice comes down to what each colour shows, and how it sits beside the rest of your trim.

BlackWhite
Shows mostDust, lint and pet hairGrime from hands, and scuffs from shoes and bags
Oak's tanninsHard to see under a dark colourCan show as yellow-brown spots without a stain blocker
Beside white trimA deliberate contrastUsually matched to the white already on the trim

White asks more of the primer. Oak holds tannins that can rise through water-based paint, which painters call tannin bleed. The stain shows most on pale colours, so a white railing starts with a stain-blocking primer.

Whites also run from cool to warm. Using the colour code of the white on your baseboards and doors keeps a new white railing from looking grey or yellow beside them.

The prep is the same for either colour. Our post on painting oak stair railings black walks through it, from degreasing to the last coat.

How do you keep using the stairs while they are painted?

By painting in an order that leaves a dry way up and down. That order depends on which parts are painted, and the crew lead talks timing through with you before the quote.

Painters usually work from the top down, so drips land on parts still to be painted. On a staircase, the handrail and balusters come before any risers or treads below them.

Baluster:

one of the upright posts between the handrail and the stairs; most people call them spindles.

When treads are painted too, two common methods keep the stairs in use:

  • Every other step. Alternate treads are painted first, and the rest once those are dry.
  • One side at a time. One half of each tread is painted, and the other half stays free to walk on until the first side dries.

Loose plastic can slide underfoot on a stair, so treads are usually covered with paper or canvas held in place. Dry paint is not yet hard paint, and How Long Does Paint Take to Dry and Cure? explains the gap.

Which finishes hold up to hands and feet on a staircase?

Trim enamel on the parts that hands and bags touch, and floor paint on any treads that get painted. Each part of a staircase takes a different kind of wear:

PartWhat wears itWhat painters usually use
HandrailHands and skin oils, every dayTrim and door enamel, or a clear coat if it stays wood
Balusters and newel postsBumps from bags, vacuums and toysTrim and door enamel
Risers and skirt boardsScuffs from shoes and the vacuumTrim and door enamel in a sheen that wipes clean
TreadsFeet and gritFloor paint made for foot traffic, or wood left clear

Floor paint dries smooth, and a smooth painted tread can be slippery underfoot. Paint makers sell grit additives that mix into floor paint and give it texture for grip.

Sheen changes how a finish wears as much as the product does. The paint sheen guide sets out what each level cleans and hides. Whatever goes on, your written quote names it by brand and line for each surface.

Why is a staircase quoted job by job?

Because its price rests on counts and details that are easy to miss. Send wide shots of the stairs and close-ups of the balusters and newel posts. A crew lead quotes from them, or comes to see the staircase when they aren't enough, and your written quote follows within 24 hours of seeing the job.

  • Count. Balusters sit close together, often two or three to a step, and each one is prepped and painted all the way round.
  • Detail. Turned balusters with beads and grooves take far longer than square ones, and so do newel posts with caps or trim.
  • Height. A railing along an upper landing, or a stairwell open to the floor above, needs ladders or a platform set up on the stairs.
  • Finish. An old clear coat, earlier paint or years of furniture polish each call for different prep.

A staircase on its own is billed at least the $750 + HST minimum. Grouping it with other work in the same visit, such as trim and doors, makes the most of that day. Why Do Painters Have a Minimum Job Charge? explains what the minimum covers.
