Yes. Oak railings and spindles take black paint well once the clear finish is degreased, scuff-sanded and coated in a bonding primer. Two coats of a hard-wearing enamel go on top, and the finish can take up to 30 days to fully harden. Staircases are quoted per project, once we've seen the staircase.
Can you paint oak railings without stripping them?
Yes. Stripping to bare wood is usually needed only if you want to restain the oak. For paint, a sound clear finish stays on, and the work is in making paint stick to it. That means a thorough degreasing, a scuff-sanding to dull the shine and a primer made for glossy surfaces.
The oak railings in many GTA homes built from the 1980s to the 2000s carry a clear coat, such as polyurethane or lacquer. Paint put straight onto that coat tends to peel, most of all on the handrail, where hands slide over it every day. That is why prep decides whether a painted railing lasts.
Two terms come up in most staircase quotes:
Newel post:
the large post at the bottom, top or turn of a staircase that anchors the handrail.
Baluster:
the proper name for a spindle, one of the vertical posts between the handrail and the stairs.
What primer and paint work on oak stair railings?
Use a bonding primer, then two coats of a hard enamel made for trim and doors. The primer grips the old clear coat, and the enamel resists hands, bags and vacuum bumps. Wall paint is too soft for a railing.
A few details make the difference with black:
- Tint the primer grey. A primer tinted toward the finish colour helps two coats of black cover evenly.
- Seal the tannins. Oak contains tannins that can bleed brown through water-based paint. A stain-blocking primer stops it, which matters most if the risers or skirt boards go white.
- Choose the sheen on purpose. Satin hides dust and small dents better. Semi-gloss wipes clean more easily but shows every speck. Black makes dust and fingerprints stand out in either sheen.
- Decide on the grain. Oak is an open-grain wood, so its texture shows through paint unless the pores are filled first.

How is an oak staircase painted black, step by step?
The job usually runs in the order below, and most of the time goes into prep and drying. Every surface gets the same treatment, including the underside of the handrail and the backs of the balusters.
- Protect. Treads, floors and the walls along the stairs are covered and masked.
- Degrease. The handrail, newel posts and balusters are washed to remove years of hand oils.
- Scuff-sand. The clear coat is sanded dull with fine sandpaper, so the primer can grip.
- Clean. Sanding dust is vacuumed and wiped off every surface.
- Prime. One coat of bonding primer, tinted grey, goes on everything that will be black.
- Fill and caulk. Dents are filled, and the joints where balusters meet the rail are caulked for crisp lines.
- First coat. The first coat of enamel goes on, followed by a light sanding once it is dry.
- Second coat. The final coat goes on, and the masking comes off once it is dry.
Round balusters are slow to brush neatly, so painters often use small brushes, foam rollers or a painting mitt. Spraying in place is possible, but it means sealing the whole stairwell against overspray. That trade-off is covered in Should Trim and Doors Be Sprayed or Brushed?
Should the handrail and treads be painted too?
Paint the handrail if you want a single black line from top to bottom, but expect it to show wear first. Treads are a different matter: they take foot traffic, so trim enamel isn't made for them. A common approach is to paint the railing and leave the treads in wood.
Common combinations:
- All black above the treads. Handrail, newels and balusters in black, with white or wood risers.
- Wood handrail, black balusters. The handrail keeps its wood finish and takes the wear, while the balusters and newels go black. Restaining a handrail darker usually means sanding it back to bare wood first.
- Carpeted stairs. Only the oak railing is painted, and the carpet is covered while the work is done.
Replacing wooden balusters with iron ones is the other route. That is carpentry, not painting, because each new baluster is cut and fitted into the rail and tread.
How long does it take, and can you use the stairs?
You can usually keep using the stairs while the railing is painted, walking carefully and keeping hands off the wet rail. The job usually takes more than one day, because the primer and each coat must dry before the next goes on. Full hardness takes longer still.
If someone at home relies on the handrail, say so before the job starts. The coats can then be timed around them.
Drying depends on the product. Recoat times on common trim enamels run from about 4 to 16 hours, and full hardness can take up to 30 days. A cool or humid house slows both, so check the data sheet for the paint named in your quote. Until the finish has cured, grip the handrail gently, keep pets and bags off the balusters, and don't tape anything to the fresh paint.

How is staircase painting priced?
Staircase and railing painting is quoted per project once we've seen the staircase, because no two staircases have the same parts. The quote counts what needs painting and the condition it is in.
What moves the price:
| What gets counted | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Balusters | Each one is degreased, sanded, primed and painted on every side |
| Newel posts | Large surfaces, often with trim and caps |
| Handrail length and fittings | Turns, goosenecks and a second storey add length |
| Risers and skirt boards | Painting them adds surfaces, and white beside black needs clean lines |
| Condition | Worn finish, dents and old touch-ups add prep |
A staircase on its own is billed at no less than the $750 + HST minimum, so it often makes sense to paint the stairwell around it at the same time. Painting a two-storey stairwell or hall runs $1,100–$2,200 before HST. That price covers the stairwell or hall itself; the railing is quoted separately. The reasons behind the minimum are explained in Why Do Painters Have a Minimum Job Charge?
How do you get a quote for your staircase?
Use Get My Estimate or text us a photo of the staircase from the bottom step. A crew lead with 15+ years of painting counts the parts and checks the finish from your photos, and comes to see the staircase when they aren't enough. Your written, itemized quote arrives within 24 hours of seeing the job and names the paint by brand and line. The work carries a written 5-year workmanship warranty. More detail is on the staircase and railing painting page.
