King City is the largest community in the Township of King, which also takes in Nobleton and Schomberg, and it sits on the southern slope of the Oak Ridges Moraine. It began as Springhill in 1836 and grew after the railway arrived in 1853, but it relied on septic systems until the mid-2000s. Since sewers came, new subdivisions have added detached houses, towns and condominiums.
Schomberg's old Main Street
Schomberg grew around a flour mill built in 1836, and some of its Main Street buildings are on the Township's heritage register. King has weighed a heritage district there, so ask the Township whether a permit is needed before changing a building's exterior.
Septic systems and paint
Sewers reached King City only in the mid-2000s, and rural homes around it still rely on septic systems. Paint washed down the drain can upset a septic system, so wipe brushes and rollers nearly clean first and keep rinsing to a minimum.
MDF trim in newer houses
By 2012 at least eight subdivisions were under construction in King City, and houses of that age often have MDF baseboards and door casings. MDF swells where water reaches a chipped or cut edge, so seal bare spots with an oil-based primer before repainting.
