House Painters in Ajax

Ajax began as wartime housing beside a munitions plant and grew into subdivisions of brick detached houses, semis and towns from the 1970s on. Great North Painting paints homes across Ajax, from the 1800s buildings of Pickering Village to the lakeside streets of south Ajax and the newer subdivisions to the north.

Local notes

What should you know about painting a home in Ajax?

Ajax grew from housing built beside a Second World War munitions plant, most of it put up by Wartime Housing Limited for the plant's workers. New subdivisions spread over central Ajax in the 1970s and the south in the early 1980s, and the population grew from about 12,500 in 1971 to about 127,000 in 2021. Most homes are detached houses, semis and towns, often in brick.

  1. Temporary houses that stayed

Workers' houses meant to be temporary were offered for sale to their occupants after the war, and some still stand. By Health Canada's guidance, a 1940s house probably has some lead-based paint, so test old trim and siding before sanding.

  2. Pickering Village, now Ajax

Pickering Village joined Ajax in 1974, and buildings from the 1800s still stand along Old Kingston Road and Church Street, some individually designated. For those, ask the Town's heritage staff whether exterior work needs a heritage permit before it starts.

  3. Wallpaper from the 1980s

Ajax's population more than doubled in the 1980s, when wallpaper and borders were popular. Paste left on a stripped wall can make latex crack, so wash it off and seal the wall with an oil-based or shellac primer.

Neighbourhoods

Neighbourhoods we serve in Ajax

What the homes are like in each part of Ajax, and what that means for a paint job.

  • Lakeside

Lakeside, in southeast Ajax between Lake Ontario and Carruthers Creek, was developed in the early 2000s with detached houses and towns. Walls facing the lake take the most wind, so their caulking is checked each spring.

  • Carruthers Creek

Carruthers Creek, named with its creek for an early settler family, has subdivisions built from the mid-2000s, and building there is still going on. Busy rooms in young houses repaint best in a washable eggshell or satin.

  • Nottingham

Nottingham, in north Ajax, was built mostly from the mid-2000s, with detached houses, semis and towns. Many have two-storey foyers, where height drives the time a job takes.

  • Northwest Ajax

Northwest Ajax, around Meadow Ridge, grew quickly in the mid-2000s with detached houses and towns. Townhouse rows share rooflines and trim, so colours are often agreed along the row.

Questions

Questions from Ajax

What does it cost to paint a bungalow's exterior in Ajax?

$4,000–$8,000 in 2026, before HST. With aluminum or vinyl siding, a detached bungalow in Ajax runs $4,000–$9,000. Your written quote sets the price.

How do you dispose of old paint in Ajax?

Drop it off free at a Region of Durham waste management facility. Durham treats paint as household hazardous waste, so it never goes in the garbage. Keep it in its original can.

Do textured ceilings in Ajax's 1970s subdivisions need an asbestos test?

Yes, before they are scraped. Asbestos was used in some textured ceilings in Canada, mainly in homes built before about 1990, and central Ajax was built in the 1970s. Every popcorn ceiling removal starts with an asbestos test, before any work begins.

What does it cost to paint the inside of a 3-bedroom house in Ajax?

$4,800–$9,500 in 2026, before HST. Size, repairs and any colour change decide where a house falls, from a 1970s split-level to a newer two-storey home.

Do you need a heritage permit to paint a house in Ajax?

Only for some older buildings. In Pickering Village, part of Ajax since 1974, some buildings are individually designated, so ask the Town's heritage staff first. Elsewhere, painting needs no building permit.
