What's included

What does colour consultation include?

The scope of this service, on top of what every Great North price includes.

  • 30 minutes with a crew lead
  • Free on painting projects over $2,500
  • Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams colour codes

Good to know

What do you leave a colour consultation with?

A colour for each surface, written down by brand and code. Our 30-minute consultation is with a crew lead, and you leave with Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams colour codes for the rooms or walls you are painting.

A code is what makes a choice usable. "A warm white" can be dozens of paints. A brand and a code is one. What happens in a colour consultation follows a session from the first room to the last.

Who gets a colour consultation free?

Anyone with a painting project over $2,500. The consultation comes with the project, so ask for it when you text us photos or call for your quote.

It is part of a painting job, not a service of its own. The colours you choose go into your written quote, which names the paint by brand and line.

How does light change a paint colour?

Light changes it more than most people expect. The same paint reads differently in each room, and at each time of day.

LightWhat it does to colour
North-facing windowsCooler, bluer light. Warm colours calm down and cool greys turn colder.
South-facing windowsWarm, strong light. Colours look lighter and warmer.
East-facing windowsWarm in the morning, cooler by afternoon
West-facing windowsFlat in the morning, warm and golden late in the day
BulbsA lower Kelvin number on the box is warmer light, a higher one cooler

So a colour chosen under store lighting is a guess. It has to be seen in the room it is going in.

How do you test a colour before you commit?

Put a large sample on more than one wall and live with it for a day. A small chip tells you little, and a sample on one wall only shows you one light.

  • Brush out two coats, about the size of a sheet of paper, or use a painted sample board.
  • Try it on a wall near a window and one away from it.
  • Look in the morning, in the evening and with the lights on.
  • Hold it against the things that are staying: floors, counters, tile.

Narrow each room to 2 or 3 colours first. More than that is harder to judge, not easier.

What should you have ready?

Know what is staying. Floors, counters, tile, cabinets and large furniture are fixed, and the paint has to work with them. Have these to hand:

  • The rooms or walls you are painting
  • Anything you already know you dislike
  • Pictures of rooms you like, even in other houses
  • Fabric or a cushion from the main furniture, if it matters

The paint sheen guide is worth a look beforehand, since sheen is chosen alongside colour.

How it works

How does the consultation fit into a painting job?

From the first photo to the final walkthrough, you know what happens next and when.

How each step works

  1. Get your price range

Use the estimator for a range in about a minute, or text us photos. A named person replies within 1 business hour.

  2. A crew lead looks it over

Your photos and sizes checked, along with every surface and its repairs. We come to see the job when photos aren't enough, when it's a big one, or once you're going ahead.

  3. Written, itemized quote

Delivered within 24 hours of seeing the job, priced on your sizes: the scope, the prep, the paint named by brand and line, the price plus HST, the dates, and any surface the warranty can't cover.

  4. Colours and scheduling

Book your start date with a 20% deposit. Projects over $2,500 include a free 30-minute colour consultation.

  5. Prep and protection

Sizes checked against your quote, furniture moved and covered, floors protected, then every surface cleaned, patched, sanded and primed where it needs it.

  6. Two coats, done properly

The paint named in your quote, cut in and rolled or sprayed as specified, with the work area cleaned up at the end of every day.

  7. Walkthrough

The rest is due an hour before we finish. We walk the finished job with you and fix any touch-ups on the spot.
