Which drywall repairs are done with a paint job?

Holes, cracks and nail pops. They are patched, sanded and primed before the paint goes on, as part of getting the surface ready. That is why drywall repair is usually quoted with a painting job and done in the same visit.

Common examples are the hole a doorknob leaves, anchors and screws from shelves or a TV mount, dents from moving furniture, and the hairline cracks that open above doors and windows.

Why do nail pops and cracks come back?

Because the house moves, not because the patch failed. Wood framing shrinks and swells as the seasons change. That movement pushes fasteners out and opens joints, most often in the first years of a new build.

A lasting repair deals with the cause. A popped nail is fixed by screwing the drywall tight to the stud beside it, not by filling over the bump. A crack is re-taped, not just filled. Fixing nail pops and cracks shows both repairs step by step.

Why does every patch need primer?

Because a patch soaks up paint differently from the wall around it. Joint compound is more porous than a painted surface. Paint over a bare patch dries duller and flatter, and the repair shows through as a dull shape. Painters call that flashing.

Primer seals the patch so the finish coats dry evenly across it. It is a small step, and it is the difference between a repair you can find and one you cannot.

How many coats of compound does a repair take?

Most repairs take 2 or 3 thin coats, each wider than the last. Thin coats shrink less and sand flatter than one thick one. Each coat has to dry before the next goes on, so a repair sets the pace for the room it is in. Patches are feathered out wider than the damage, so the edge disappears under paint instead of showing as a ridge.

How do you make the most of a small repair job?

Group it with other work. A repair on its own is billed at the $750 + HST minimum, which covers one crew-day. A room, some trim and a few repairs in one visit use that day well.
