Worked examples
How much does it cost to paint several rooms at once?
Painting three bedrooms with their ceilings and trim costs $2,100–$3,900 in 2026, before HST. Other common combinations add up the same way, from the published rows.
| Example | What it covers | Total before HST |
|---|---|---|
| Two bedrooms, walls only | The walls of two bedrooms, in one visit | from $900 |
| Main floor | Living and dining rooms, both ceilings, and about 200 linear feet of trim | $2,300–$4,600 |
| Bedrooms and the stairwell | Three bedrooms with ceilings and trim, and a two-storey stairwell or hall | $3,200–$6,100 |
Bedrooms have a row that already includes the ceiling and trim. For other rooms, the ceiling and trim are added from their own rows, as in the main-floor example. Room sizes, repairs and the colour change decide where each part lands in its range.
Small jobs add up the same way. A 12-by-12-foot bedroom has about 90 linear feet of trim, as our guide to spraying or brushing trim shows. Its walls and that trim come to from $675. Booked on its own, a job that size is billed at least the $750 + HST minimum.
How much do ceilings and trim add to the total?
For a living room with about 100 linear feet of baseboard and casing, the ceiling and trim together add $450–$800 to the room's own price. Here is how that room's total builds:
| Living room | Total before HST |
|---|---|
| The room | $700–$1,500 |
| The room and its ceiling | $900–$1,900 |
| The room, its ceiling and 100 linear feet of trim | $1,150–$2,300 |
Trim is priced by the linear foot, so the footage decides its share. Baseboard runs along every wall, less the doorways. Casing frames each window and both sides of each interior door. Crown adds roughly the room's perimeter again, running where the walls meet the ceiling.
Across a whole floor, it adds up. Three ceilings and 250 linear feet of trim come to $1,225–$2,200 on top of the rooms themselves.
Interior doors are quoted with the job, so they aren't in these sums. Count your doors before you ask for a price, so every quote you compare covers the same ones.
What does a whole-home interior cost per square foot?
A home with 3,000 square feet of wall area costs $6,000–$9,750 at the whole-home rate in 2026, before HST. The rate is for wall area, the square footage of the walls themselves, not the floor area in a listing.
The two numbers can be far apart. A 12-by-12-foot bedroom has 144 square feet of floor, but its walls come to 384 square feet with 8-foot ceilings. So 3,000 square feet of wall is about the walls of eight rooms that size.
To estimate your own, add up the walls of each room, then the halls and the stairwell. Our guide to the cost to paint a room shows how to work out one room's wall area. Your quote is priced on the area you give us, and if the crew finds more or less wall, the price changes to match before any work starts.
Materials scale the same way. Premium wall paints typically list 350 to 450 square feet per coat from a US gallon, so two coats over 3,000 square feet take roughly 13 to 17 gallons. A US gallon is about 3.8 litres. Our guide to how many coats of paint walls need explains those figures.
Where a home lands in the rate depends on the same things as a single room: the repairs, the height of the walls and the colour change. The rate suits a home of any size, while the 3-bedroom row in the table above gives a typical 3-bedroom home as one range. Ceilings and trim are priced on their own, so check how each quote you compare handles them.
How can you save on an interior paint job?
Spend on the surfaces that need it and leave sound ones alone. These choices lower a total without cutting prep or coats:
- Leave a sound ceiling for next time. Ceilings take little wear. If yours is clean, with no stains or cracks, it can often wait for the next repaint.
- Run one wall colour through connected spaces. Every place two colours meet needs its own cut line. One colour through the hall, stairwell and landing means fewer colour breaks and fewer cans to mix.
- Keep deep colours to one wall. Deep and bright colours often need a tinted primer or an extra coat. Sherwin-Williams, for one, recommends a tinted primer under its Emerald interior paint for full hide and colour. An accent wall keeps that extra work to one wall.
- Book repairs with the painting. Drywall repair is usually done in the same job, so each patch is primed and painted in one visit.
- Choose a washable finish where walls get marked. Halls, stairwells and kids' rooms stay fresh longer in a finish that wipes clean, which puts off the next repaint. The sheen guide shows which finish suits each room.
What should you watch for in an interior painting quote?
Watch for what the quote leaves unsaid about the scope and the prep. A short quote can look cheaper simply because it covers less.
| What to watch for | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| No mention of ceilings, trim, closets or doors | You can't compare it with a quote that includes them, and they can turn into extras later |
| No sheen named for the walls and trim | Sheen decides how a wall cleans and how much it shows, as the sheen guide explains |
| "Paint and primer in one" in place of priming stains | Water and smoke stains need a stain-blocking primer, as the primer guide explains |
| Nothing about protecting floors and furniture | Protection takes real time, and a quote that leaves it out may skip it |
| Sanding old paint in a pre-1960 home, with no test | Health Canada says a home built before 1960 probably contains lead paint |
Our checklist of what a painting quote should include covers the lines every quote needs, inside or out.
What should you list before asking for an interior price?
List every room and surface you want painted, so each range and quote covers the same scope. A complete list also stops small items turning into extras on the day.
- Rooms, noting tall walls and two-storey stairwells.
- The ceilings to include.
- Trim: baseboard, casing and crown.
- Interior doors, which are quoted with the job.
- Closets.
- Repairs such as cracks, holes and nail pops.
- Colours, or a note that you want help choosing them.
Then use Get My Estimate for a range in about a minute, and send photos of each room. A crew lead checks every surface from them, and your written, itemized quote arrives within 24 hours of seeing the job.

Questions
Questions GTA homeowners ask
Is the estimate free?
Yes. The range from our estimator, your written quote and any visit to see the job are all free. Your itemized quote arrives within 24 hours of seeing the job.
Are your prices before or after HST?
Before HST. Our published prices include every mandatory fee, travel included.
Is the paint included in the price?
Yes. Every price includes two coats of the paint named in your quote, along with the prep and the daily cleanup.
What is the smallest job you take on?
The minimum job is $750 + HST, which covers one crew-day. Grouping small jobs into one visit, such as a room, some trim and a few drywall repairs, makes the most of it.
Do you paint in the winter?
Yes, indoors. Interior paint goes on well in a heated home in any season, while exterior work waits for the warmer, drier weather the paint needs.
Is prep included in the price?
Yes. Every surface is cleaned, patched, sanded and primed where it needs it before the two coats go on.
Do you move the furniture?
Yes. We move and cover furniture and protect the floors before any prep starts, and the work area is cleaned up at the end of every day.
What does your warranty cover?
Peeling, blistering and flaking caused by how we prepared or applied the paint, for 5 years on interiors, 3 on exteriors and 2 on cabinet finishes. It covers every surface your quote accepts. It doesn't cover moisture, movement, failing surfaces or older coats underneath, wear, impact, abuse or work by others.
