Should You Paint or Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets?

When painting kitchen cabinets makes sense and when replacing does, what sprayed cabinet painting costs in the GTA, and how long the finish takes to harden.

Paint your kitchen cabinets when the boxes are solid and the layout works. Replace them when the boxes are water-damaged, the doors are peeling thermofoil, or you want a new layout. Sprayed cabinet painting in the GTA runs $3,200–$8,500 before HST for most kitchens. The finish can take up to 30 days to fully harden.

When does painting kitchen cabinets make sense?

Painting makes sense when the cabinet boxes are sound, the doors are solid and you like the layout. If the problem is the colour, dated oak or a worn finish, paint fixes it. It usually costs a fraction of new cabinets. Your counters, sink, plumbing and backsplash stay where they are.

Painting is a strong fit when:

  • The boxes are square, dry and firmly fixed to the wall.
  • The doors and drawer fronts are solid wood, MDF or intact wood veneer.
  • The hinges and drawer slides work, or can be replaced on their own.
  • The layout suits the way you cook, and you want to keep your counters.

The classic case is the honey-oak kitchen found in many GTA homes built in the 1980s and 1990s. The boxes are often in good shape, but the orange tone dates the whole room. Paint changes the colour and keeps everything that still works.

When should you replace kitchen cabinets instead?

Replace them when the problem is structural, not cosmetic. Paint can't fix swollen particleboard, a broken box or a layout that doesn't work. It can't reattach thermofoil that is peeling off the door, either.

Signs that replacement is the better spend:

  • Water damage. The sink base or the panel beside the dishwasher is swollen, soft or coming apart.
  • Peeling thermofoil. The vinyl skin is lifting near the oven, kettle or dishwasher.
  • Failing boxes. Shelves sag, face frames are loose, or drawer boxes are falling apart.
  • A new layout. You want an island, taller uppers, or the sink in a different spot.

Replacement also tends to grow. Counters don't always survive removal, and new boxes may not match the old footprint, so budget for new tops and backsplash tile too.

There is a middle path when the boxes are sound but you dislike the door style itself.

Refacing:

keeping the existing cabinet boxes, covering their faces in new veneer and fitting new doors and drawer fronts.

Which cabinet materials can be painted?

Solid wood, MDF and wood veneer take paint well once they are cleaned, sanded and primed. Laminate and thermofoil can be painted only with the right primer, and only while the surface is still firmly bonded. Particleboard that has swollen from water can't be saved with paint.

MaterialCan it be painted? What it needs
Solid oak or mapleYesDegreasing, sanding and a stain-blocking primer
MDFYes, very wellSanding and primer; cut edges soak up paint and need extra priming
Wood veneerYes, if intactLight sanding only, so the thin veneer isn't sanded through
LaminateWith careA scuff-sand to dull the surface and a primer made to grip slick surfaces
ThermofoilOnly if fully bondedA bonding primer; lifting or bubbled thermofoil means new doors
Swollen particleboardNoReplacement

Oak needs one extra decision. It is an open-grain wood, so its grain texture shows through paint. Some people like that texture. If you want a glass-smooth door, the grain has to be filled before priming. That adds time, so decide before the job is priced.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets in the GTA?

Most GTA kitchens cost $3,200–$8,500 to paint, before HST. Priced by the piece, it is from $160 per piece, counting each door, drawer front and panel. The 13% HST in Ontario is added to either figure.

ScopePrice, before HST
Kitchen cabinets, most kitchens$3,200–$8,500
Doors, drawer fronts and panels, sprayedFrom $160per piece

Prices are in CAD before HST and include every mandatory fee. Minimum job $750 + HST (one crew-day).

What moves a kitchen within that range:

  • The piece count. A compact kitchen might have 20 doors and drawer fronts. A large one with an island and a pantry can pass 40.
  • Condition. Heavy grease, deep scratches and failing old paint all add prep time.
  • The colour change. Covering dark stain with white takes more priming than going from white to navy.
  • Oak grain. Filling the grain for a smooth finish adds work to every door.
  • Extras. Crown moulding, open shelves, an island's back panel and filling old hardware holes.

To rough out your own kitchen, count its doors, drawer fronts and panels. Multiply by the starting rate of $160 a piece. Condition and the extras above move the price up from there. For the full breakdown, read the cabinet painting cost guide.

How is a kitchen painted so the finish lasts?

A lasting cabinet finish is mostly prep. Paint only holds as well as the surface under it, and kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease and hand oils. A sprayed cabinet job usually runs in this order:

  1. Remove and label. Doors, drawer fronts and hardware come off, each piece labelled so it goes back in the same spot.
  2. Degrease. Every surface is washed with a degreaser, because paint won't bond over grease.
  3. Scuff-sand. The old finish is sanded dull so the primer can grip, then the dust is removed.
  4. Repair. Dents, gouges and unwanted hardware holes are filled and sanded flush.
  5. Prime. A bonding primer goes on every surface, often tinted toward the finish colour. On oak, the primer also has to block stains.
  6. Spray two coats. Doors and fronts are sprayed, with a light sanding between coats.
  7. Rehang and adjust. Doors go back on and are adjusted so the gaps are even.

Bonding primer:

a primer made to grip hard, glossy surfaces such as old varnish, laminate or thermofoil, so the paint on top has something to hold.

The topcoat matters as much as the primer. Cabinets need a hard enamel made for doors and trim, not wall paint, which stays too soft for surfaces handled every day. Spraying leaves no brush marks, which is why cabinet doors are usually sprayed. The trade-offs are covered in Should Trim and Doors Be Sprayed or Brushed?, and primer choices in Do You Need Primer Before Painting?

How long does the cabinet finish take to harden?

Cabinet enamel is dry to the touch in hours but takes weeks to reach full hardness. For example, Benjamin Moore's data sheet for its ADVANCE enamel lists 4 to 6 hours to touch and 16 hours before the next coat. It says full hardness can take up to 30 days. Other products differ, so check the data sheet for the paint named in your quote.

StageWhat it meansTypical time for common cabinet enamels
Dry to the touchIt no longer marks when touched lightly1 to 6 hours
Ready to recoatThe next coat can go on4 to 16 hours
Full cureThe film reaches its full hardnessUp to about 30 days

Data sheets measure those times at about 25°C and 50% humidity. A cool or humid room slows every stage. The same Benjamin Moore sheet says to keep shelves out of service for at least 5 to 7 days.

For the first few weeks:

  • Close doors gently, and don't hang damp tea towels over them.
  • Wipe spills with a soft, damp cloth; skip scrubbing pads and harsh cleaners.
  • Fit small felt or silicone bumpers, so doors don't press against the frames while they harden.
