When Is the Best Time to Paint a House Exterior in the GTA?

The months that suit exterior painting in the GTA, what spring rain and summer heat do to paint, and why booking early gets you the dates you want.

In the GTA, late May to September is the most reliable window for exterior painting. June and September are often the most comfortable months. Paint needs dry walls, mild nights and shade from hot sun. Many exterior paints need about 10°C and rising, so April and late October work only on good days.

Which months are best for exterior painting in the GTA?

Late May through September gives the most dependable painting weather in the GTA. June and September are often the most comfortable, with mild days, mild nights and fewer heat waves than midsummer. July and August work well too, as long as the crew stays out of direct sun.

Here is how the months compare at Toronto Pearson, from Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991–2020 climate normals.

MonthAverage highAverage lowDays with rainFor exterior paint
April12°C2°C12Marginal: cold nights, damp walls
May19°C8°C13Good from mid to late May
June25°C14°C11Very good: long, mild days
July27°C17°C10Good, working in the shade
August26°C16°C10Good, working in the shade
September22°C12°C10Very good: mild days and nights
October15°C5°C13Possible on good days, with the right paint
November8°C0°C10Too cold for most exterior paint

Downtown nights run a little milder than at the airport. On hot days, the lake keeps the waterfront cooler.

Is fall too late to paint the outside of a house?

September isn't; it is often the best month of the year. October can work with a low-temperature paint, on dry days with mild nights. By November, most days are too cold.

In fall, the limits are the nights and the daylight. October nights average about 5°C at Pearson. Sunset moves from about 7 p.m. to about 6:10 p.m. over the month. With morning dew to wait out as well, the working day gets short. If you miss the window, winter is a good time for interior painting instead.

Is spring a good time to paint a house exterior?

Late spring is, but early spring usually isn't. April nights average about 2°C at Pearson, and May nights about 8°C. Many paints can't go on until mid to late May, and spring rain and the thaw leave walls damp.

A wall has to be dry inside, not just dry to the touch. Wood siding and trim can take days to dry after a wet week. The U.S. Forest Products Laboratory says wood painted above 20% moisture content is more likely to blister and peel. So careful painters check wood with a moisture meter before they start.

Moisture meter:

a hand-held tool that reads how much water is in wood or masonry, so a painter knows when it is dry enough to paint.

Spring also brings pollen and seed fluff, which stick to wet paint. Still, a late-May or June start has one big advantage. The paint gets a whole summer to cure before its first winter.

Is it ever too hot to paint outside?

Yes, when the sun is on the wall. Paint makers warn against painting in direct sun, because a dark wall in the sun can be far hotter than the air. The paint then dries too fast to level out, which leaves lap marks and can cause blistering.

Lap marks:

visible stripes where wet paint overlaps paint that has already started to dry.

One major brand's data sheet notes that its paint sets up quickly above about 27°C. So the fix for summer heat is timing, not a different season.

Humid heat brings its own problems. Humid air slows drying, and humid nights bring heavy dew. On GTA heat-wave days, when the humidex climbs past 40, a crew may start early and stop early.

What time of day is best for exterior painting?

In summer, the best time for each wall is when it is in shade. In spring and fall, it is from mid-morning, once the dew has dried, to mid-afternoon. That leaves the paint a few hours to set before the evening dew.

On a summer job, crews follow the shade around the house:

  1. The west wall in the morning, while the sun is on the east side.
  2. The east wall in the afternoon, once the sun has moved west.
  3. The south wall early or late in the day, when the sun is off it.
  4. The north wall once the dew is off, since it sees the least direct sun.

In spring and fall, the order changes. The walls that dry and warm first are the ones the morning sun has reached. Shaded walls stay damp with dew for longer, so they come later in the day.

How much dry weather does exterior paint need?

It needs a dry surface before it goes on and a few dry hours after. Paint makers publish a rain-ready time, and for many exterior latex paints it is a few hours. One major brand's data sheet says not to paint if rain is expected within 2 to 3 hours.

After rain, the walls need time to dry out. Siding in the sun can be ready the next day. Shaded walls, wood trim and masonry often take longer.

Dew counts as rain. Fresh latex paint hit by evening dew can show tan or brown streaks, called surfactant leaching. The same brand says most paints need at least 4 hours to dry before moisture settles on them. That is why exterior work stops well before evening in spring and fall. Our post on how cold is too cold to paint outside explains the dew point rule.

A careful painter checks the forecast every day and moves a day rather than paint into rain. Your quote should say how weather days are handled.

When should you book an exterior painter in the GTA?

Book in winter or early spring for a June to September start. The season is short, so summer dates tend to fill first. Photos and the written quote can come well before the season, as long as the walls are clear of snow.

When you compare quotes, check that each one states:

  • The paint by brand and line, so you can look up its temperature range.
  • The prep: washing, scraping, repairs, caulking and priming.
  • A start window, and how rain days are handled.
  • A written warranty on the work.
